Grant call for R&D in Sustainable Urban Food Production
The Singapore Food Agency launched on 12 November the second grant call for R&D in Sustainable Urban Food Production.
The grant call, open until 12 January 2022, provides funding support for innovative urban agriculture projects in the research areas of disease and health management as well as nutrient & quality preservation for fresh produce, to address challenges faced by urban agricultural industry.
The Singapore government is very much interested in Vertical Farming under the 30 by 30 vision launched in April 2019 to produce 30% of its nutritional needs by 2030.
So, facilities, technologies, equipment and knowhow within Vertical Farming could very much be a relevant area for European companies.
The priority development sectors of the Singapore government’s 30 by 30 goal identified are:
- Urban agriculture,
- Aquaculture,
- Novel foods,
- and Circular economy, in particular the recycling of agricultural and food waste.
Among the new foods, the most sought are alternatives to animal proteins, of plant or cellular origin, and foods modified to reduce or solve the problems posed by the aging of the population and chronic diseases such as diabetes which are on the rise in Singapore.
